Information for Industry

Industry is working with Australian governments by providing valuable information about their products and practices around chemicals of security concern.

Industry can also provide important advice to the National Government Advisory Group on possible mitigation measures that may increase the security of chemicals of concern.

National Industry Reference Group (NIRG)

Australian governments are working with industry through the National Industry Reference Group (NIRG).

The role of the NIRG is to provide industry advice and assistance to Australian governments through the NGAG. Advice provided to the NGAG will help in any response required to chemicals of security concern identified during risk assessment.

The responsibilities of the NIRG can be found in the Intergovernmental Agreement.

Why Industry is Important

Industry has significant expertise in the areas of chemical manufacturing, storage, transportation and distribution. This expert knowledge is essential in the security risk assessment process and will inform any required proportionate mitigation measures.

Industry is also well placed to identify suspicious customers and purchasing habits. The Chemical Security Public Awareness Campaign is targeted to industry to help Australian governments protect the community through the reporting of suspicious transactions.

Industry is encouraged to ‘Know Your Customer’ and report any suspicious transactions to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.

Alternatively, you can email the National Security Hotline at hotline@nationalsecurity.gov.au.

How Can Industry Help?

The Government recognises that businesses are best placed to prevent, detect and deter suspicious purchases of chemicals.

This is why businesses are being encouraged to ‘Know Your Customer’ and report anything that seems unusual to the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.

What Can Industry Do?

Industry can help by identifying suspicious use of chemicals, such as looking out for large or unusual chemical orders or requests.

Or by asking questions:

  • Is the customer unfamiliar with the chemical’s intended purpose?
  • Does the customer have invalid or out-of-date documentation?
  • Are the chemicals being purchased with large cash payments?
  • Is the customer willing to provide adequate forms of identification?
